In the second lesson, pupils will begin to look at the process of setting up a business and the tasks involved in this. They will compare the differences and similarities of businesses and social enterprises and start thinking about their own shop’s branding and logo.

The third lesson will see the pupils learn about the different roles and responsibilities involved in running a shop. They will watch a video of various Asda colleagues explaining their roles and the skills required. The pupils then conduct a “job interview” and apply for a role that suits them.

The pupils then run their shop for the rest of the academic year, stocked with surplus food which we will fund across all 11 stores, and sourced by our partner Rethink Food. The surplus food such as fresh fruit and vegetables, canned and other dry goods are provided for families whose children attend the school. Over the course of the academic year, over 500 children will receive food from the community shops, providing over 150,000 meals.

Kloe Tegg, Better Starts Manager, at Asda said:
“Food waste is a huge issue across the country, with millions of tonnes of good food thrown away each year.
So we are delighted to be working with a company like Rethink Food who are just as passionate as us about cutting out food waste and making a difference in local communities. This programme will help inform the next generation around the effects of food waste, while also teaching entrepreneurship and help reduce the amount of food which goes to landfill each year.”

Kevin Mackay, Director at Rethink Food, said:
“Collaborating with Asda gives us the opportunity to further improve outcomes for children and young people.
In working with Asda's amazing Community Champions to Rethink Food we are able to deliver our education programme across the UK and empower pupils to create a more sustainable food future”

Schools in Northern Ireland, Liverpool, Birmingham, Yorkshire, Wales, the South Coast, Manchester, Lancashire, Tyneside and south east London will all be taking part.
