    Cheat's steak & ale pie

This cheat’s steak & ale pie recipe uses ready-made puff pastry to save time. Skirt is perfect for slow cooking, but braising steak works just as well.

    Ingredients

3 x 442g packs Asda Beef Braising Steak

    50g plain flour, seasoned

    2 onions, chopped

    2 tbsp oil

    15g butter

500ml Asda Extra Special Whitechapel Porter Ale

    300ml hot beef stock

500g Ready to Roll Puff Pastry

    1 egg, lightly beaten

    350g cabbage, to serve

    New potatoes, to serve

    Method

    1
Pre-heat the oven to 160/140C Fan/Gas 3. Cut the beef into 2cm pieces, trimming any fat, and coat with the flour.
    2
Fry the onion in half the oil until soft. Cook the beef in batches in the butter and oil until brown. Add the onion and beef to a casserole dish. Pour the ale and stock over the meat, cover and cook for 2 ½ hours. Divide between two dishes. Leave to cool. Heat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.
    3
Roll the pastry out to make two lids, with a 1cm overlap. Cut two thin strips.
    4
Lay the strips on the damp edge of the pie dishes. Brush with the egg and top with the pastry. Make a central hole, brush with egg and bake one pie for 30 minutes.
    5
Serve with the veg. Freeze the other pie.
