Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep to reunite for new Mary Poppins film?

Gird your loins, Devil Wears Prada fans; Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are rumoured to be teaming up yet again, for another film following the success of the 2006 fashion flick and of course, Into The Woods.

Only this time, the plot is set to be far more sugar-sweet. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, even.

Yes, Meryl is rumoured to be in final talks to star alongside Emily Blunt in Disney’s brand new Mary Poppins film, Mary Poppins Returns.

Rather than simply remaking the classic, however (if it ain’t broke...), the new film will pick up some 20 years after the final scene of the original, taking its storyline from P.L. Travers’ wider Mary Poppins book series.

With there being eight books in total - the original 1964 film focused largely on just the first in the series – there’s set to be plenty of new action for Mary Poppins to get up to when she reunites with Jane and Michael Banks as adults, now living in less than cheery Depression-era London.

Emily has already confirmed that she’ll be taking on the lead role made famous by Julie Andrews – have there ever been bigger shoes to fill, we wonder? – while Variety reports that Meryl is set to star as Mary Poppins’ cousin, Topsy Turvey, who features in the 1935 book Mary Poppins Comes Back.

If you’ve long struggled to decide which is your favourite Meryl Streep performance – her ice cold turn as Miranda Priestly, or full of song and sunshine in Mamma Mia, you’re in luck. Topsy Turvey is set to be a little of both.

When she first appears in the book, Topsy is described as: “A round, red-faced woman, looking more like two apples placed one on top of the other than a human being, stood in the doorway. Her straight hair was scraped into a knob at the top of her head and her thin mouth had a cross and peevish expression.”

However, thanks to the Mary Poppins effect, she soon loosens up and since the film is set to be a live-action musical, we’re expecting to enjoy plenty of sing-song from both Meryl and Emily.

Set to hit cinemas on Christmas Day 2018 (we know, it’s one heck of a wait), Mary Poppins Returns will also star Lin Manuel-Miranda, from hit Broadway musical Hamilton, as a street-lamp lighter called Jack.

With all that talent on one screen, we just can’t wait! There’s no official trailer yet, so in the meantime, let’s all just enjoy this…
