Ingredients

30g Butter

2 Large Brown Onions, finely sliced

2 Garlic Cloves, finely sliced

4 tsp Brown Sugar

1 tsp Thyme Leaves

¼ Reduced-salt Beef Stock Cube, crumbled

4 Asda Extra Special New York Style Hot Dog Sausages

4 Asda Extra Special Sliced Brioche Hot Dog Rolls

4 Iceberg Lettuce Leaves, shredded

20g Asda 50% Less Fat Mature Cheddar, finely grated

Mustard, to serve (optional)

Method

1
Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onions. Stir well to coat all. Cover and cook over a low heat for 7 mins to steam and soften.
2
Remove the lid, add the garlic and cook for a further 5 mins, keeping the heat low to avoid the onions colouring. Stir in the sugar and half the thyme. Increase the heat to medium. Cook for 8–10 mins more. Stir until browned but not burning.
3
Add the ¼ stock cube and cook for a further min, stirring, until dissolved. Set aside to cool. Cover and chill until needed. This can be done up to 2 days in advance.
4
When ready to assemble, cook the hot dogs on the BBQ over a medium heat for 8–10 mins, turning until lightly charred and cooked through.
5
Sprinkle the hot dog buns with a little water and heat in the microwave for 10–15 secs to steam – this will give the perfect New York hot dog texture. Or, place on the BBQ for 10–20 secs each side.
6
Divide the lettuce between the buns followed by a hot dog. Top with onions then the cheese. Drizzle over the mustard if using and sprinkle over the remaining thyme leaves before serving.
7
To cook indoors: Preheat the grill to medium-high. Cook the hot dogs for 20–25 mins. Turn the sausages occasionally until well coloured.
