<p>In the U.K, households throw away over 26.8 million tonnes of waste - way too much, right?</p><p>Not to mention 336,000 tonnes of unwanted clothing that gets thrown away every year. But here at George HQ, we're very big believers in doing our bit for the environment. Whether it's reducing our packaging use or sourcing more sustainable cotton for our clothes &ndash; looking after the environment is at the forefront of everything we do. </p><p>In fact, since 2008, <a href="https://www.asda.com/good-living/article/george-asda-corporate-partner-new-life" target="_blank">we've been donating any surplus clothing stock</a> to <a href="https://newlifecharity.co.uk/" target="_blank">Newlife</a> &ndash; a charity dedicated to helping and improving the lives of disabled children in the UK. And, if you didn't know already, any of your unwanted clothing can be donated and recyled at our <a href="https://www.loveyourclothes.org.uk/about/partners/george-asda" target="_blank">Ticked Pink bins</a> in your <a href="https://direct.asda.com/george/george-clothing-in-store,default,pg.html" target="_blank">local Asda store</a>. </p><p>So, to help celebrate Global Recycle Day on March 18th, we've pulled together 5 tips on how to up your recyling game...</p><h2>TIP 1:  Recycle your clothes</h2><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="organised-clothes-hanging-on-rck" class="ci-image ci-original" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/organised-clothes-hanging-on-rck_GL?scl=1"></p><p>Been putting off decluttering your wardrobe? Now's the time to do it - and donate to a good cause at the same time. We've got our <a href="https://www.asda.com/good-living/article/do-your-part-this-national-recycle-week" target="_blank">bright pink Tickled Pink bins</a> set up in Asda stores up and down the UK, of which 60% of all proceeds are split between the breast cancer charities <a href="https://breastcancernow.org/" target="_blank">Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now</a>.</p><p>So, if you've got any men's, women's or children's clothing, plus underwear, shoes and accessories, make sure they're clean then pop them in a bag and bring them along to your local Asda to help recyle them today. </p><h2>TIP 2: Re<span style="font-family: Frontage-Regular; font-size: 1.25rem; letter-spacing: -3px; text-transform: uppercase;">cycle plastic bags separately </span></h2><p>Plastic bags apparently slow down the entire recycling process. This is because humans have to actually sort through this, individually opening them and then disposing of the bags, which makes the whole thing a lot more time consuming.</p><p>Instead of throwing them away or recycling them, separate the bags and recycle any unwated ones in your local Asda store using the specified bins. That way, you don't have to take them home and fill your cupboards with them! And as well as plastic bags and empty bin liners, you can now recycle certain magazine wraps and food packaging alongside your old plastic bags! Just look out for any icons on the plastic packaging and film that it's recyclable.</p><h2>Step 3: got lots of hangers? Don't bin them! </h2><p><img alt class="ci-image ci-hero" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/clothes_and_hangers_on_sale__hero_GL?scl=1"></p><p>This year we&rsquo;re aiming to increase hanger recycling from 22% to 30%. The move, which <a href="https://www.asda.com/environment/packaging?cmpid=otc-good-_-ahc-_-5-ways-were-reducing-our-packaging-use-_-community-_-section" target="_blank">supports our Reuse and Recycle programme</a>, means we&rsquo;ll be encouraging customers to keep hold of hangers instead of throwing them away. Customers can also leave hangers &ndash; as well as any other plastic or paper packaging &ndash; in stores before they leave. Check out where your local store is by using <a href="https://storelocator.asda.com/" target="_blank">our store locator</a>. </p><h2>STEP 4: Make, do and Mend </h2><p>Got an attachment to your favourite jeans? Or is some of your clothing in poor condition to sell or donate? Why not give your clothing a new lease of life by reparing an old zip, tear or rip or even turning old jumpers into cushion covers. Upcycling is a a great way to create something new, turn things you love into masterpieces and help do your bit for the planet.  It's a win-win!</p><h2>STEP 5: Host a clothes swap</h2><p><img alt class="ci-image ci-hero" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/screen_shot_2019-10-04_at_11.50.39__hero_GL?scl=1"></p><p>Because sharing is caring, right? A clothes swap is the quickest way to recycle your own clothing by passing them on to others, whilst finding a few gems of your own. </p><p>It&rsquo;s simple: just bring along your unwanted clothing and swap it with other people. Only good quality and clean items are accepted, so you're gaurenteed to leave with a second-hand outfit that's 'new' for you!</p><p><em>Want to track down your local store?
