The experts reveal the hues that sell - and the ones that don't

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to cheer up the look of your home is with a fresh lick of paint. But with <a href="http://direct.asda.com/george/paint-buying-guide,default,pg.html?utm_source=goodliving&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=home-ideas-decorating-how-to-paint-a-house-to-sell-it" target="_blank">so many colours and hues on offer</a>, it can be tricky picking the right one. So how do you know if, when and how to paint a house? Personal preference should always come first of course, but if you&rsquo;re thinking about selling your home anytime soon then you may want to invest in some paintbrushes and think twice about the exact shade you pick. That&rsquo;s according to a <a href="http://zillow.mediaroom.com/2016-06-23-Homes-with-White-Kitchens-Sell-for-1-400-Less-than-Homes-with-Yellow-Kitchens" target="_blank">recent report from home improvement website Zillow Digs</a> that revealed how certain colours could affect the value of your home - for better and for worse! The website looked at data from more than 50,000 photos of recently sold homes, and discovered that rooms painted certain hues fetched consistently lower prices. They also found that other shades correlated with homes selling for more than what they were expected to.Warm neutrals faired the best, with yellows and light greys increasing the value of homes.When it came to homes that sold less than expected, certain colours seemed to crop up again and again. For example, homes with dark wall colours like slate and brown, consistently sold approximately £850 less than expected. But not all shades of grey are created equal! Check out which grey hues the report found increased the value of their homes below. </li><li>Off white: Kitchens painted off-white or eggshell fetched about £62 less than the predicted estimate. </li><li>Brown: You might love a dark brown hue, but apparently painting the bedroom this colour knocks about £180 off the value. </li><li>Terracotta: This burnt orange hue looks lovely in flowers and pots, but apparently painting your living room terracotta decreases a home's value by approximately £600. </li></ul><img alt="bedroom-with-green-wall__hero" class="ci-image ci-hero" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/bedroom-with-green-wall__hero_GL?scl=1">The paint shades that could help you sell your home for more are:<ul><li>Creamy or wheat yellow: According to the report, these calming colours in the kitchen could help you sell your home for as much as £1,040 more. </li><li>Light green: Inject some colour into the bedroom - light green to khaki green could increase your home's value by £1,020.</li><li>Light grey: Although dark grey could be off-putting for many shoppers, dove or light grey in the living room could increase your home's value by £840.</li></ul> Of course, when it comes to painting your home then you should really just choose the colours that you love!
