This is how each of the Spice Girls got their nicknames

The Spice Girls are the girl band who put the ‘power’ in ‘girl power’.

And when they rose to fame in the 90s, with their fun, catchy and upbeat hits with the likes of Spice Up Your Life and Who Do You Think You Are, Spicemania circled the globe.

The famous fivesome, which was formed of Sporty (Mel Chisolm), Baby (Emma Bunton), Posh (Victoria Beckham), Ginger (Geri Halliwell) and Scary Spice (Mel Brown), dropped their first single with their 1996's iconic hit Wannabe, and it established the group as a global phenomenon. 

From then on they scored the Christmas Number 1 single three years in a row.

But how exactly did the girls get their well-known nicknames?

Earlier this week, Scary Spice or Mel B (as she's now known), spoke to the host of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert, where she revealed all.

She said: “Girl groups weren’t very popular [back then], it was all about the boy groups so we had this one journalist that I guess was extremely lazy, and couldn’t be bothered to remember all of our names and just gave us like nicknames.

“Like ‘oh yeah that one’s a bit Scary, that one’s a bit Posh, that one’s a bit sporty’ …and they just kind of stuck,” she said.

“He couldn’t be bothered. It kind of just worked.

“I like mine, because at least I’m scaring people before I’ve even walked in the room so watch out.”

Mel, who is the new star of 'Chicago' on Broadway, also went into a bit of history of how the band was formed all those years ago in 1994. 

She said: "The actual real original story is that there was an original audition for a girl group.

“The guy wouldn’t sign us, so us five kind of selected ourselves together. We worked on our music and created our first and second album by promising people that we’d pay them back.

She added: “And we never did.”

The star said they then found their former manager, Simon Fuller, and the whole band ‘erupted’. They went on to have 9 UK Number 1s, 10 UK top 10s and spent a whopping 184 weeks in the top 75.
