Lovers of the original Mary Poppins film will remember Julie Andrews&rsquo; character as the warm, good-natured nanny dishing out spoons full of sugar to sweeten life for Jane and Michael Banks.But according to Emily Blunt, who is about to pick up where Andrews left off for Disney&rsquo;s new film <a href="https://www.asda.com/good-living/article/mary-poppins-film">Mary Poppins Returns</a>, we could be in for a bit of a change.Mary Poppins it seems, wasn&rsquo;t always meant to be so very nice.In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt revealed that she was rather nervous about taking on one of the nation&rsquo;s best-loved characters.“I feel a little more trepidation with this [character] because she&rsquo;s so emblematic of people&rsquo;s nostalgia. It&rsquo;s such an important character in people&rsquo;s childhood,” she explained.But that&rsquo;s not the only thing that&rsquo;s got the actress feeling apprehensive. The fact that the film will present a slightly different version of Mary Poppins, also has her concerned about how longtime fans of the children&rsquo;s film will react.<iframe allowfullscreen frameborder="0" height="415" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vLkp_Dx6VdI" width="760"></iframe>Rather than simply remaking the original, which was based on the first Mary Poppins book written by P.L. Travers, Mary Poppins Returns will be based on adventures from the seven novels that followed the first instalment.The new film will also be taking a closer look at how Mary Poppins is originally described by P.L. Travers.“We&rsquo;re delving into the books a lot more,” confirms Blunt, “which is a different version of the character, I&rsquo;ll say that much.”So will we be seeing the tougher, firmer and even slightly vain Poppins that the famous book series depicts?Though Blunt didn&rsquo;t reveal too much, she did note: “She&rsquo;s a little meaner, yeah.”But while Emily may have her concerns about the changes afoot, one thing she doesn&rsquo;t need to worry about is whether or not Julie Andrews will approve. The legendary star has already given Blunt her blessing!“[Director Rob Marshall] said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It&rsquo;s top secret, but Emily Blunt&rsquo;s playing Mary Poppins,&rsquo;” the actress tells EW. “And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!&rsquo; I felt like I wanted to cry. It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”We can't wait to see Blunt don her magic umbrella.Mary Poppins Returns is due to hit cinemas on 25th December 2018.
