Does the idea of crafting with young children fill you with dread? Take a deep breath and keep reading, because it turns out that not all DIY projects require making a special trip to the arts and craft shop and covering the entire kitchen with newspaper.

From egg shell painting to creating bubbles with just baking soda and vinegar, we've found 12 fun and easy Easter crafts that you can do with kids, mostly with objects you'll already have lying around the house! Have fun!

1. Patterned egg shells

You’ll need paper towels, a disposable plastic container, nail polishes in assorted colours, a wooden skewer, water at room temperature, fresh hollowed eggs or polystyrene eggs, a drinking straw and needle*.

Cover your table with paper towels to protect it then fill the plastic container three-quarters full with water at room temperature. (This is very important – if the water is too cold or too hot, the polish will sink or thicken too quickly). Pour a few drops of each nail polish over the water surface. The more you use, the darker and more covered the eggs will get. Lightly swirl the water with a skewer to combine the colours a little. Take care not to over-mix. Working quickly, dip an egg into the water, twirling it around until it’s covered all over with colour. Set the egg aside in the empty egg box to dry. Use the nail polish remover to get rid of any polish on your fingers. To hang your eggs, ask a grown-up to thread a long sewing/darning needle with thread before you do your marbling. Poke the needle through the hole at one end of the egg, and out through the other, then tie a large knot at the bottom to secure it.

TOP TIP TO HOLLOWING OUT EGGS: Pierce the top and bottom of an egg with a needle. Push the needle through one of the holes and swirl it around to break up the yolk. Working over a bowl, put the end of a straw over one of the holes and blow until all the contents have come out of the other end (keep the eggs in the fridge to scramble later). Repeat for all the eggs. Rinse out each egg with water and allow to dry overnight.

*Children should always be supervised by an adult when using sharp tools or components.

4. Pin the tail on the rabbit

Not just a fun crafts idea for little ones to enjoy but a game, too! Draw a bunny outline for them, cut out a few squares of white paper and then watch as children try to pin the tail on the bunny.
