On Sunday 30 October the annual <a href="https://www.asda.com/good-living/tag/diwali">Diwali</a> festival of lights will illuminate the world. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is perhaps the most well-known of the Hindu celebrations.The ceremony is dedicated to the triumph of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali honours the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, and the legend of Rama and Sita. Many people start the new business year at Diwali and some Hindus will say prayers to the goddess for a successful year ahead.The word Diwali literally translates as 'rows of lighted lamps'. Hindus, Sikhs and Jains in India and around the world celebrate Diwali every year by praying to God to remove evil (darkness) and provide enlightenment of Hindu knowledge (Lightness) by lighting oil lamps and candles to signify the triumph of good over evil.
