A fifth of adults have low levels of the sunshine vitamin

New research says that we&rsquo;re not getting enough vitamin D in the winter months, meaning we need to supplement our diets with vitamin D-rich and fortified foods.Public Health England has suggested that more foods should be fortified with the vitamin. Enter <a href="http://groceries.asda.com/product/semi-skimmed-milk/asda-vitamin-d-semi-skimmed-fresh-milk/910002935580" target="_blank">Asda vitamin D milk</a>! We'd love a splash of that on our cereal in the morning.<img alt="vitamin-d-milk" class="ci-image ci-original" src="https://ui3.assets-asda.com/dm/vitamin-d-milk_GL?scl=1" style="width: 500px;"><h2>Why is vitamin D so good?</h2>Vitamin D is made in the skin while out in the sun, so many of us have much lower levels of the stuff in winter. Its main function is to absorb calcium and phosphorus which helps maintain normal bones and teeth. It also helps with the normal functioning of the immune system and it helps maintain normal muscle function. A lack of the stuff can lead to deformities in children such as rickets (a condition that affects bone development in children and causes the bones to become soft and weak), and bone pain in adults which is a result of the condition, osteomalacia.<h2>Where does it occur naturally in foods?</h2>Between October and early March we don&rsquo;t get enough vitamin D from sunlight so it&rsquo;s good to top up with vitamin D-rich foods.Oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel are a good source of vitamin D, as are eggs.
