<p>It's taken centuries, but the nation may have finally reached a consensus on how to pronounce 'scone' correctly, thereby solving a very British problem. </p><p>It's a debate that has raged in every office and home across the land for many, many years - do you pronounce it 'scone' as in 'gone', or 'scone' as in 'bone'? </p><p>Now, finally, the debate appears to have been settled. Sort of. </p><p>A <a href="https://yougov.co.uk/news/2016/10/31/its-scone-gone-not-scone-bone/" target="_blank">YouGov survey</a> has revealed that the majority of Brits (51%) agree the correct pronounciation is to rhyme it with 'gone'. By comparison, around four in ten Brits (42%) rhyme it with 'bone' (we have no idea how the remaining 7% are pronouncing it - maybe they just can't make up their minds). </p><p>So, 'gone' wins, albeit only by a nose. </p><p>The survey also found that the way you pronounce 'scone' is strongly influenced by where you live. 'Those living in the North (60%) and Scotland (80%) overwhelmingly use the “gone” pronunciation, while those in the Midlands (56%) and London (50%) are much more likely to go with the “bone” option,' the report explains. </p><p>The survey also sought to put to bed another age-old scone debate - which comes first, the jam or the cream? Here, the Cornish method (jam first) came out on top, with 61% of the vote.
