This store cupboard staple is more than just a condiment

This store cupboard staple is more than just a condiment

Mayonnaise is a must-have in every household. Who doesn't love it dolloped over chips or mixed with garlic for a cheat's aioli?

But this favourite condiment is actually more versatile than you first thought. From key recipes to mayonnaise-related hacks, we've outlined a handful of very good reasons why you should stay stocked up on the stuff…

One thing's for sure – mayo really is more than a mere sandwich spread!

Sherry Roast chicken with mayo mash

Adding mayonnaise and milk to your potatoes results in an extra-creamy, indulgent mash – the perfect accompaniment to roasted chicken legs with sherry-enhanced pan juices. Don't forget to scatter over chopped chives and parsley before serving! This is one tasty dish.

    Egg mayo sandwiches

Teamed with cress, egg mayonnaise has to be one of our nation's favourite sandwich fillers. You can season it however you like (we suggest adding curry powder and mustard), and spoon it over doughy white bread, dark rye or a crusty baguette. Take your pick!

Did you know mayonnaise can be used in a variety of other ways?

Mayo isn't just a delicious key ingredient! Here are a few more reasons why it's good to have a jar of the stuff on standby…

    1)  To help stick breadcrumbs

Traditionally, if you want to breadcrumb a piece of chicken for your fave katsu curry, you would first dip the chicken breast in an egg mixture. But what if you're out of eggs? No problem! Instead, spread mayo over the chicken breast and then move on to the fun breadcrumbing step. The breadcrumbs will stick perfectly well and leave your chicken deliciously crispy once baked or fried. Yum!

    2) Add to cake batter

Sound a little odd? Hear us out on this one. Add 1-2tbsp of plain mayonnaise into your cake batter before mixing and pouring into your baking tins – we've found this works best in a chocolate cake to be sure you don't taste any mayo flavour. It'll add a wonderful richness to your overall bake.

    3) Clean faux houseplants

Make the leaves of your faux indoor plants look as good as new by wiping down the leaves, then rubbing on a tiny dollop of mayo with a damp washcloth. Note: we don't suggest this for real houseplants.

    4) Remove sticker residue

The oils in mayo are really efficient in breaking down adhesive. If you're struggling to get the pesky sticker residue off a glass, simply apply some mayo, let it sit for about 20 minutes, then wipe with a wet cloth. The sticker should peel straight off.

    5) Clean wooden surfaces

Got white marks or rings on your wooden furniture? For a good-as-new tabletop, simply put a dab of mayo on kitchen towel and press it into the mark, then allow it to sit for an hour and buff the spot with a clean cloth afterwards. Done and dusted!
