Bag of Potatoes

British Sourcing

We are proud to work with British Growers.

In 2021, 100% of our own brand dairy (milk, cream, butter and cheddar), eggs, potatoes and primary breaded chicken came from British farms.

Local Sourcing

We know that more customers are interested in ‘buying local’ and we’re working with more than 300 local suppliers who now provide more than 2,000 product lines into our stores. We’re also helping local suppliers to understand how to build a relationship with Asda by running supplier academies in Northern Ireland and Scotland in partnership with local authorities. At these sessions we provide expert advice and give suppliers an inside look at how our depots and stores work. We will continue to expand the programme’s reach and flexibility with online modules, and we’ll keep on optimising our local ranges.

Supplier Support

93% of suppliers agreed that Asda "consistently or mostly" follows the Groceries Supply Code of Practice

Our suppliers are important strategic partners and we strive to be fair and clear in all our dealings with them. As one of the UK’s largest grocers, we are governed by the Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP), a set of legal rules for grocery retailers on managing supplier relationships. The Groceries Code Adjudicator survey undertaken in the first quarter of 2022 showed that for the previous 12 months, 93% of Asda’s suppliers ranked Asda as “consistently or mostly” follow the Code.

We appreciate and value the feedback, using the results to inform improvements to our ways of working.

Some of our highlights in 2022 include:

  • revising our approach to reviewing cost price increase requests – our buyers now have the tools they need to review commodity data and can validate requests within shorter timescales;

  • enhancing internal monitoring for De-lists and forensic auditing, which provides additional assurance that these activities are Code-compliant;

  • Asda’s Code Compliance Officer (“CCO”) attending the GCA’s Supplier Conference in September 2022, supporting Supplier awareness and engagement with the Code;

  • delivering training to 177 new and existing Buying colleagues, whose role touches and concerns the Code;

  • a 28.5% reduction in the number of matters we are required to report to the GCA; and

  • a 64% reduction in the average time taken to resolve matters we are required to report to the GCA.
